The player assumes the role of a Sentinel maintenance worker tasked with finding a golden bird called Starglider. The Starglider is nothing but a disguised form of the enemy clan Ergon’s spacecraft. In Novenia, the Starglider is considered sacred and is therefore not on the radar of their automated defense systems. At its core, Fly8 was a "frame-rate first" simulator. While other games focused on beautiful cockpit graphics and bitmapped textures, Fly8 used wireframe or flat-shaded polygons. The primary objective was to provide a high-speed, networked multiplayer flight experience. It was designed to run smoothly even on slower machines (like 386s) where more "bloated" simulators would crawl. It featured various aircraft, including the F-16 and the Harrier (which could perform vertical take-offs). It included combat elements, allowing players to engage in dogfights across a network.
