Description

Spaced (1996), programmed by Daniel Haffner, is a classic top-down, vertically scrolling space shooter created during the golden era of MS-DOS shareware.
The plot follows a lone fighter pilot thrust into a desperate mission to save humanity's outer colonies from an invading alien fleet. As the vanguard force of extraterrestrial ships obliterates orbital defenses, you must pilot an advanced prototype starfighter directly into enemy-controlled space. Gameplay revolves around dodging dense bullet patterns, maneuvering through asteroid fields, and destroying swarms of alien craft across multiple increasingly difficult stages. Along the way, players collect weapon upgrades, shield restorers, and special ordnance to enhance their ship's firepower against massive end-of-level boss ships. The game features vibrant 256-color VGA pixel graphics, smooth parallax scrolling, and an energetic chiptune soundtrack that drives the fast-paced arcade action. Overall, it stands as a charming example of mid-90s solo indie game development on DOS.
