Description
SpaceKids (1995) is an interactive animated adventure/storybook game developed by Evryware, Inc. (the sibling duo Dave and Barry Murry, best known for creating Ancient Art of War) and
published by MicroProse.
It was designed specifically for young children (ages 3–8), prioritizing colorful cartoon visuals, full-screen animation, and simple story choices over complex mechanics or text reading.
The game follows two alien kids, Zeep and Bif, who live peacefully with their parents on the moon. One day, their father flies off to planet Earth on a research mission and accidentally
gets captured by humans.
Armed with their trusty saucer ship and a floating robot companion named Gimbal, Zeep and Bif set off on a rescue mission to Earth to save their father and bring him home.
Rather than traditional platforming or point-and-click inventory puzzles, SpaceKids plays like an interactive cartoon movie. Designed for pre-readers, the game features no written text
dialog. Instead, at key narrative branching points, large graphical icons pop up on screen (e.g., choose between a friendly approach or a sneaky distraction). Making different choices leads
to entirely different animated sequences, mini-games, and locations on Earth. There are multiple ways through the narrative, encouraging kids to replay the story to see alternate outcomes.
There are no "Game Over" screens or punishing deaths; making an incorrect choice simply leads to a funny slapstick animation before guiding the player back onto a track toward completing
the story.
For 1995, SpaceKids was visually impressive due to its smooth, hand-drawn 256-color VGA animation. It felt like playing through a Saturday morning cartoon. It fully utilized the CD-ROM
format, featuring full digitized voice acting, cartoon sound effects, and a lively MIDI soundtrack.
