Super Spellicopter is a fun spelling game, whose objective was to help kids develop and improve their spelling skills.
Developed and published by Britannica software, the game was released in the United States in 1991. It runs on the DOS
platform. The game is an enhancement of Spellicopter, which was released by DesignWare in 1983.
The design is similar to a 3D flying/shooter game. At the start of the game, the player gets an option to choose
the kind of words to spell and gets to set the difficulty level of the game, based on their spelling skills.
They can also choose the kind of terrain they want to fly over, and the helicopter they want to fly. the game provides
a first-person perspective, so the player assumes the role of the pilot. Once the selections are made and the pilot
is in the cockpit, a sentence is displayed on the screen with several missing letters. It is the job of the pilot
to look for the missing letters and shoot them down. However, there are several challenges like enemy choppers and
gun turrets that are trying to blow up the helicopter. The player must grab all the letters while surviving the enemy
attack and make his way back to the base. The game has a total of 400 words, of varying length and difficulty.
The game also provides the option of creating your own word list, which can be added to the game vocabulary.
This gives the player the opportunity to regulate the difficulty level of the game and monitor the child's progress.
