Description
The game follows young martial artist Ryu as he competes in an international tournament to prove his strength against ten formidable fighters
across five countries. A second player can join the match at any time as Ryu’s rival Ken Masters, triggering a head-to-head duel where the
winner continues the single-player tournament ladder.
Gameplay takes place across one-on-one matches in Japan, the United States, England, China, and Thailand, culminating in a final boss battle
against the martial arts master Sagat. Street Fighter introduced the iconic six-button control scheme divided into light, medium, and heavy
variations of punches and kicks. It also pioneered command-based special attacks, requiring specific directional joystick inputs combined
with button presses to execute the Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyakud.
The MS-DOS port attempted to recreate the arcade experience for home PCs, relying on 16-color EGA or 4-color CGA graphics cards of the
late 1980s. Because standard PC keyboards lacked the responsive multi-button layouts of arcade cabinets, executing special moves in the DOS
version proved exceptionally difficult and notoriously clunky. The audio presentation was similarly constrained, relying on PC speaker bleeps
or early sound card synthesis rather than the arcade’s digitized voice samples and music.
Despite these technical limitations on PC hardware, the game introduced fundamental mechanics—such as blocking, multi-national character
rosters, and special move inputs—that established the core template for competitive fighting games. Between main tournament fights, players
participated in bonus stages, such as breaking wooden boards and cinder blocks, to earn extra points.
While its legendary 1991 sequel Street Fighter II ultimately overshadowed it in popularity, the 1987 original remains a historic landmark that
launched one of the most successful franchises in gaming history.
