Description

Reader Rabbit 2 is a classic educational computer game developed and published by The Learning Company in 1991 for MS-DOS (and later ported to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS).
Aimed at children aged 5 to 8 (typically kindergarten through 2nd grade), it built upon the massive success of the original 1986 Reader Rabbit game by helping early readers expand their phonics, word recognition, and spelling skills.
The game takes place in the fictional land of Wordville. Reader Rabbit and his friends travel around the region aboard a hand-operated railroad cart (Wordway Train). To help build and maintain Wordville, players visit four distinct, themed educational locations:
1. Crystal Calipillar's Crystal Mine (Vowel Sounds)
2. Barnaby Bear's Word Mine (Consonant Blends & Compounds)
3. Ernest the Worm's Fishing Pond (Rhyming Words)
4. Matchup Mine / Memory Game (Antonyms, Synonyms, & Homonyms)
Each location features a specific mini-game designed around a foundational reading concept:
Players identify words with specific short or long vowel sounds (e.g., distinguishing between "hat" and "hate") to feed a hungry caterpillar that turns them into glowing crystals.
Focuses on initial and final consonant blends, digram sounds (like sh, ch, th), and compound words. Players group matching words into mining cars.
Players cast a fishing line to catch words that rhyme with a target word displayed on screen.
A classic concentration memory-match game where players turn over cards to match synonyms (words with similar meanings), antonyms (opposites), or homonyms (words that sound the same).
