Description

Links 386 Pro, released in 1992 by Access Software, was the "killer app" for PC sports gaming in the early 90s. While other golf games felt like cartoons, Links 386 Pro was designed to look and feel like a high-end simulation, specifically optimized to push the limits of the then-powerful Intel 80386 processor. Links 386 Pro was one of the first major titles to utilize Super VGA (SVGA), offering a stunning 640×480 resolution with 256 colors. The courses weren't just drawn; they were based on digitized photographs of real-world locations like Harbour Town Golf Links. It featured a revolutionary pre-shot "camera fly-by" that showed you the terrain of the hole, which was mind-blowing at the time. If you had a sound card, you heard digitized sounds of birds chirping, the wind whistling, and the satisfying "clack" of the club hitting the ball.
The game perfected the three-click swing system that many golf games still use today:
- First click: Starts the backswing.
- Second click: Sets the power (at the top of the gauge).
- Third click: Determines the "snap" or accuracy (at the bottom).
It wasn't just about clicking, though. You had to account for wind speed, terrain slope, and grass type. The ball physics were incredibly advanced for 1992, calculating actual trajectories rather than just moving a sprite across the screen.

Linkspro/Links386 still is a viable game. I ran the Dolinks and Regular Tour from 1996-2002. However, some of us still play. Well just two of us now. We play most week-ends. I have set the system up to run on Windows 10, Linux and of course on old Windows platforms. (Using Dosbox) - we run all the courses as well. My old web-page "Linkspro Tour" still exists. But I woudl be interested to know if there are still avid players.

6/25/2020 9:22:00 PM - GyRo This was my first game ever at 3 years old, just hours before I was introduced to Super Mario Bros. later that same day. While playing Golf w/ Friends with my pinball team, I was explaining how my "natural talent" was actually forged in childhood on Links 386. I learned how to load it in DOS before I knew how to read! It's wonderful to be able to revisit, all these decades & OS's later. I would absolutely join you for a round someday if you're still playing, unknown author!
