Description
IndyCar Racing, released in 1993, is widely considered the "Big Bang" of modern sim racing. Developed by the legendary Papyrus Design Group (led by David Kaemmer), it moved
the needle from "racing games" to "racing simulations."
The goal isn't just to "finish first"—it’s to manage a full 1993 CART (IndyCar) season. You compete across a variety of real-world tracks to accumulate points and win the
PPG Indy Car World Series.
Unlike arcade racers, you don't just jump into the race. You have to go through Practice and Qualifying sessions.
Papyrus didn't just want you to drive; they wanted you to be an engineer. This game introduced levels of customization that were unheard of in 1993:
- The Garage: You could tweak almost every part of the car.
- Aerodynamics: Adjust front and rear wing angles for downforce vs. speed.
- Gear Ratios: Optimize for short street circuits or long oval straights.
- Tires/Suspension: Stiffen the springs or change the tire pressure to combat "push" (understeer) or "loose" (oversteer) conditions.
For the first time, things like tire wear, fuel consumption, and damage actually mattered. If you hit a wall at 200 mph, your suspension would bend, and your race was
effectively over.
