Description

Advantage Tennis (1991), developed and published by Infogrames, is widely considered one of the most ambitious and technically impressive sports simulations of the early 90s. While many tennis games of that era were arcade-like, this one leaned heavily into realism.
The goal is to rise from a lowly rookie to the world #1 ranking on the professional circuit. You don't just play matches; you manage a career. You have to travel to tournaments around the globe, earn prize money, and improve your attributes.
Unlike the sprite-based (flat) characters in International 3D Tennis, Advantage Tennis used 3D polygons (vector graphics) for the players. This allowed for incredibly smooth animations and various camera angles that were groundbreaking for 1991. Between tournaments, you have to train. You can practice specific shots (service, volley, baseline) to increase your skill bars. If you don't train, your performance drops. The ball physics were quite demanding. You couldn't just mash buttons; timing and positioning were critical. The game even accounted for different court surfaces (clay, grass, hard court), which changed the ball's bounce and speed. It featured "TV-style" presentations with a referee's voice (digitized speech) and crowd reactions, which added to the immersion.
