Description
Zeppelin: Giants of the Sky (often known by its shorter title Zeppelin!), released in 1994, is a deep economic simulation developed by the German studio Ikarion Software. If you’ve played
German business sims of the 90s (like The Patrician or Hanse), you know exactly what to expect: a high-quality, spreadsheet-heavy, and historically rich management experience.
The game starts you off in the year 1900, the dawn of the airship era. Your goal is to follow in the footsteps of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin and build a world-dominating transport
and luxury travel company. You must navigate through four decades of history (ending in the 1940s), surviving economic depressions, the transition from hydrogen to helium, and the
technological shift towards fixed-wing aircraft.
You don't just buy airships; you design them. You have to research better materials for the hull, more efficient engines, and choose between the dangerous but cheap Hydrogen or the
safe but expensive Helium. You set up global routes between major cities. You have to balance the weight of the fuel, the cargo, and the passengers. Too much weight and your Zeppelin
won't clear the mountains; too little cargo and you'll go bankrupt. To attract high-paying passengers, you must outfit your airships with luxury cabins, dining rooms, and even grand
pianos. The game captures the "Titanic of the Skies" vibe perfectly. The game world is dynamic. The outbreak of World War I will pivot your business toward military contracts
(scouting and bombing), while the Hindenburg disaster later in the game drastically changes public perception of your industry.
