Description
Wacky Wheels, released in 1994 by Beavis-Soft and published by the legendary Apogee Software, was the PC's spirited answer to Super Mario Kart.
At a time when kart racers were almost exclusive to consoles, Wacky Wheels brought that frantic, "friendship-ending" combat racing to DOS with a cast of zoo animals and
some seriously clever technical tricks.
Choose your favorite animal and win a series of championships (the Bronze, Silver, and Gold cups). You race across various themed tracks—from sunny beaches to dark, spooky
castles—while using weapons to sabotage your opponents.
What made Wacky Wheels truly iconic wasn't just the racing; it was the combat.
Hedgehogs: Instead of shells, you fired hedgehogs! Some were single-shot, while others were "triple hedgehogs" that fanned out.
Oil Slicks & Fireballs: Standard kart fare, but executed with great "oomph."
Collectibles: You had to drive over "wacky" icons to pick up ammo. Unlike modern games where you get a random item, in Wacky Wheels, you usually knew exactly what you were picking up.
The Characters: You had a roster of 8 animals, including Tigers, Lions, Pandas, and Sharks. Fun fact: they all had the exact same stats; the choice was purely about who you thought
looked coolest behind the wheel.
