Description
You play as Retrox. Your primary goal is to penetrate the deepest layer of a massive underground insect colony to destroy the leader, Phylox, and shut down the breeding chambers.
To reach the end, you have to:
- Navigate the Labyrinth: The game is a side-scrolling shooter, but the levels are more like tunnels than open skies. You have to fly carefully to avoid environmental hazards and
the walls themselves.
- Exterminate the Mutations: The screen is often swarming with genetically modified insects. You must manage your two primary weapons—the Laser (for direct, fast-moving threats)
and the Grenade Launcher (for armored enemies or targets below you).
- Resource Management: You have to keep an eye on your Fuel and Energy (shields). If you run out of fuel, you crash; if your energy hits zero from enemy contact, you're destroyed.
You find pods throughout the tunnels to replenish these.
Much like the games we discussed earlier (like MoleZ or Loopz), Phylox relies on momentum. You don't just "move" left or right; you apply thrust. This makes combat intense because
you have to fight the drift of your ship while trying to aim at small, fast-moving bugs. At the end of major sections, you face larger "guardian" insects before finally reaching
the breeding chambers of Phylox itself. As was common in 1992, the game was often distributed as a single episode. If you wanted the full mission to take down the entire hive,
you had to register with Beavis-Soft to receive the rest of the game on a floppy disk.
