Richard Branson expanded his Virgin business into computer games in the early 80s, initially concentrating on the ZX Spectrum. Within a few years they had an impressive roster of licenses, such as many Taito arcade games and UK publishing of Synergistic titles. The company bought out Mastertronic in 1989, briefly using the name for reissues and Virgin Mastertronic for full-price titles. In 1993 they became Virgin Interactive Entertainment, before eventually working with Electronic Arts. Ultimately they were bought by Titus as a subsidiary and the name Virgin Interactive Entertainment was used until April 2003. The name was changed to Avalon Interactive in May 2003 and it was responsible for the European distribution of the group's games.

Description

Sport of Kings is a horse-riding simulation developed by Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc. The game was released in 1991 in the United States and runs on the DOS platform. Sport of Kings was designed by the famed Ed Ringler and is known to be one of the superior horse racing simulations to date.
The game recreates a racecourse where the player can place bets on horses and win money. To place bets, the player or players need to first enter their names in the tournament. Once done, the player will be provided information about the horses that are racing and their respective jockeys.
The player has at their disposal several important pieces of information about the horses like jockey history, past records of the horses, the chances of winning, and weather conditions. Apart from these, there are several things that need to be considered before actually placing the bet. The number of bets the player can place depends upon the number of horses that are competing in a race and the risk factor. A riskier bet can make the player win more money, but that would also mean placing a lot of money at stake which can backfire if the horse doesn’t win. Hence it is important to make use of the several data available and make a thorough analysis. There is the whole life history and past record of the jockeys and betters that are available. Apart from strong analytical skills and sharp instincts, there are other factors that can affect the outcome of a bet. There are options to buy tips from betters but one must be careful to not spend a lot of money on them, which could ultimately eat into the profits from winning a race. The race can be saved and reviewed for future reference.
