Paladin II (1992) is a classic tactical turn-based strategy/wargame developed and published by Omnitrend Software, Inc. for MS-DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST. It served as the
direct sequel to the original 1988 fantasy wargame Paladin, refining its core mechanics and expanding its scenario editor capabilities.
Unlike traditional party-based role-playing games of its era (like Ultima or Eye of the Beholder), Paladin II is a grid-based tactical wargame with fantasy RPG elements.
You command squad-level units—ranging from paladins, archers, and wizards to mythical creatures like dragons and giant spiders—on a top-down hex/square map.
The game takes place in the fantasy world of Middle World, where players engage in various fantasy combat scenarios involving questing, siege warfare, and squad tactics.
Units move across a grid map using action points. Position, line-of-sight, terrain cover, and weapon range dictate success. Surviving troops gain experience between
battles. Winning scenarios allows units to rank up, increasing their hit points, combat effectiveness, and morale. Features a wide array of unit types with distinct
abilities (e.g., spellcasters have mana reserves, ranged units require ammunition, mounted units have greater movement range).
One of Paladin II’s primary selling points was its built-in editor, which allowed players to design custom maps, create unit rosters, and set victory conditions.
