Description
Nihilist is an obscure, futuristic 3D sci-fi action and vehicular combat game released for MS-DOS in 1996. Developed by the British studio Bits Corporation
(often credited simply as Bits) and published by Philips Interactive Media, it was created during the mid-90s transition period when PC gaming was moving
from 2D sprite graphics to fully rendered 3D environments.
Set in a dystopian future, Nihilist drops players into an intergalactic arena combat tournament. You pilot heavily armed, hover-capable combat vehicles
(referred to as skimmers or starfighters) across foreign alien planets and asteroid arenas. The atmosphere is dark, industrial, and heavy on sci-fi tropes
typical of mid-90s PC action titles.
The gameplay mixes elements of 6-DOF (six degrees of freedom) space shooters like Descent with ground-based vehicle shooters like Twisted Metal or Terminal
Velocity. Players navigate full 3D environments, maneuvering up, down, and around obstacle-filled arenas to hunt down rival pilots. You start with basic lasers
and cannons, but as you destroy opponents and explore arenas, you pick up heat-seeking missiles, energy shields, plasma blasters, and engine boosters. Each arena
requires you to eliminate a set number of enemy ships and boss crafts while managing your shields, ammunition, and energy reserves.
