Atari Europe S.A.S.U. is a majority owned subsidiary of the holding company Infogrames Entertainment SA with worldwide headquarters in Lyon, France. The company was founded in June 1983 as Infogrames by Bruno Bonnell and Christophe Sapet and was primarily known as a game developer during the late 1980's and 1990's. Their best-known games include the initial Alone in the Dark trilogy, as well as various games based on Franco-Belgian comics.
Together with the US headquarters Atari, Inc. (formerly Infogrames, Inc.) in New York, the European division is a global publisher and distributor of games for all major consoles and also computers, with many development studios under its wings. Description
From the title screen and cover art, where you see a magician holding back a laugh, one can
tell that this game has some humor to it.
MYSTICAL follows the voyages of the supreme magician from the Marsh of Eternal Stench to the
Garden of Eden. In between these two destinations are monsters of various convoluted shapes,
who have special powers, various health bars, and the sole intention of getting in your way.
It is funny, from the movements to the action, and the monsters, everything has a funny tinge.
You have an overhead vertical scrolling view so you can only move in four directions.
In this mystical world where you travel through these enchanted forests, you will find
collectibles like magical potions, scrolls, elemental powers, and even genie assistants.
You will also find all kinds of enemies like monsters, monks, moving trees, and crazy doctors
all coming at you.
Points accumulate as you go deeper into the game, and when you die you can see where you rank
on the leaderboard. You have to hold on and survive till you reach the Garden of Eden.
Had the graphics been spotty and wonky, players would not have been able to appreciate the humor
in this game. The overhead perspective of the game design shows you the entire terrain,
including which enemies are coming your way. Released in 1990 by Infogrames Europe SA,
MYSTICAL is available on Dos, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, MSX, Windows, and Zx Spectrum.
