Description

Loopz, released in 1990 and developed by Audiogenic Software Ltd., is a clever "action-puzzle" game that was released during the height of the post-Tetris puzzle boom. Unlike Pipe Dream, which requires you to build a path from A to B, Loopz is entirely about closed circuits.
The objective is simple but becomes increasingly frantic: you are given a series of random, geometric pipe pieces (straight lines, corners, S-curves, and large C-shapes) and you must place them on a grid to form a completely closed loop. As soon as you complete a closed loop of any size or shape, all the pieces involved in that loop disappear from the board, and you earn points. If you cannot place a piece on the board because you've run out of room, or if the timer runs out before you can place your current piece, you lose a life. You can build multiple loops at once or "nest" loops inside one another. Larger, more complex loops earn significantly higher scores than small squares.
You play as long as you can, with the speed and complexity of pieces increasing over time. A more structured mode where you must reach a specific score within a time limit to "unlock" the next level. The game shows you a completed loop, then removes several pieces. You must use the pieces provided to perfectly recreate the original loop.
The DOS version featured clean VGA/EGA graphics. While it wasn't flashy, the pieces were very distinct, which was crucial since a single misaligned corner could ruin a massive setup. The game is famous for its catchy, driving soundtrack composed by David Whittaker. On an MT-32 or high-end sound card of the time, the music was quite atmospheric.
