Level 9 Computing, Ltd.
Level 9 Computing Ltd was founded in 1981 in the United Kingdom by three brothers: Mike, Pete and Nick Austin. Its aim was to produce and publish high quality text adventures initially for the BBC computer, and later the company expanded to other 8-bit and 16-bit computers of that era. Mainly due to the decline in sales of text based adventures at the end of the 80s, Level 9 Computing had to close down in mid 1991. In the ten years in between it published over 20 main titles plus some licensed titles which have helped shape the adventure scene. Most of those releases were highly appreciated (and compared against those of Infocom). The theme of these adventures was initially set in fantasy and Middle Earth (which yielded the compilation: Jewels of Darkness), and later it published adventures with a Sci-Fi theme (Silicon Dreams trilogy). In the mid-80s it added relative rudimentary graphics to new and existing releases.

Description

Back in the ancient days when knights were still around, saving the world from various atrocities, Lancelot was among the bravest of them all. The game Lancelot brings back the times of the Wizards and the knights of the Round Table. The game rightly depicts the story of the foundation of the knights to its most glorious days, the capture of the Holy Grail. It was developed by Level 9 Computing and eventually released in the year 1988 by Datasoft. To its core it is an text based adventure fantasy game that allowed players to play the role of Lancelot as he goes on an adventure through the plains where he is met by various opponents. Camelot is the name of the region where Lancelot is asked to go on the quest. He is met by the Black Knight while travelling in the outskirts of the region. Lancelot has to fight him and defeat him in order to continue. Many other missions also take place within the journey for example saving a distressed woman from a tower she was locked in to. He has to then face off with a dragon in the chapel who tries to kill Lancelot. Ultimately he has to complete all the missions before he can find the holy grail. The interface of the game involved pictures with text descriptions underneath. The game to its core was an interactive text based fantasy.
