Description
Originally a massive arcade hit with three steering wheels, the 1989 DOS port managed to capture that chaotic, dirt-spraying energy surprisingly well.
It isn't just a racing game; it’s a game of momentum and resource management.
You play as a driver (usually the Red Truck) competing against three other racers—including the legendary "Ironman" himself in the White Truck. Your goal is to finish at the
top of the standings across a series of increasingly bumpy, bridge-filled, and twisty tracks.
Unlike many racers of the era, the race is only half the battle. After every heat, you get prize money based on your finishing position. You also collect money bags that
randomly appear on the track during the race.
You spend this cash in the shop to upgrade:
- Top Speed: Higher velocity on straights.
- Acceleration: Essential for recovering after a crash or a jump.
- Shocks: Keeps your truck from bouncing wildly when hitting bumps (very important for staying in control).
- Tires: Better grip for those tight, sliding corners.
- Nitros: The "magic button." These give you a massive burst of speed to overtake opponents or clear a huge jump.
There is no scrolling. You see the entire track from a high, isometric angle. This makes the game feel like you're playing with high-speed remote-controlled cars.
The trucks are incredibly "bouncy." If you hit a hill at the wrong angle, you’ll go flying into a wall or land on top of another racer.
You start with a limited number of Nitros. Knowing exactly when to burn one to steal the lead—and when to save it for the next race—is the key to a long career.
