Description
Crosscountry USA (Home Edition) (1995) is a highly nostalgic, text-and-map-driven educational simulation game developed and published by the Canadian
studio Didatech Software Ltd. (later renamed Ingenuity Works).
While the original 1985 school version was a classroom staple across North America alongside The Oregon Trail, the 1995 Home Edition overhauled the
game for MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, and Macintosh. It was specifically designed to let kids continue their long-haul trucking adventure on their family PCs.
The game casts you as a long-haul truck driver tasked with driving a massive 18-wheeler truck across the United States. Your main goal is to pick up specific
commodities (like oranges, steel, or auto parts) from various cities and deliver them safely to their destinations across a map of 180 simulated American cities.
Instead of gathering boring trivia, the game forces you to learn practical U.S. geography, distance estimating, and map-reading by putting you directly behind
the wheel.
Crosscountry USA plays less like an arcade driver and more like a tactical resource manager. The game engine simulates realistic trucking regulations and human limits:
- You interact with your rig using an interactive dashboard. You click icons or type in direct, literal commands to control your vehicle: turn on motor, fasten belt,
turn on wipers, or examine map.
- You have to constantly monitor your truck's fuel gauge, your remaining cash pool, and your driver's physical needs. If you drive too long without stopping to eat
at a truck stop or rest at a motel, your driver will grow fatigued, eventually falling asleep at the wheel and causing a catastrophic crash.
- The game incorporates a dynamic weather and climate system. If you try to power through a sudden blizzard in the Rocky Mountains without slowing down or typing the
command to put on your tire chains, you will jackknife your truck, damaging your cargo and losing precious time.
- As you cruise along the highways, you are occasionally prompted with geography-based questions to secure bonuses. You can also pull over to pick up hitchhikers, who
will chat with you and offer regional trivia about the state you are currently driving through.
