Charlie Chaplin is a classic silent-cinema-inspired action/arcade game released in 1988/1989, developed by Canvas Software and published by U.S. Gold for MS-DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, and ZX Spectrum.
The game is a homage to the golden era of silent comedy, casting the player as a movie director creating a silent film starring Charlie Chaplin’s famous character, The Tramp.
Rather than playing through a standard platformer, you take on the role of a film director. Your goal is to shoot short silent movie scenes featuring Charlie Chaplin, achieve high comedy ratings from the film studio, and successfully finish a silent movie reel.
The game faithfully captures the aesthetic of 1920s cinema by presenting the action in monochrome/sepia tones with classic intertitles between scenes. You control Charlie as he moves through side-scrolling movie sets (such as city streets, parks, and indoor locations). You must navigate obstacles, avoid policemen, and interact with various objects and characters to create comedic situations.
As the director, you can control the camera speed (cranking the camera faster or slower to recreate the classic fast-paced silent film slapstick motion). You can trigger stage events, props, and comedic gags at specific moments.
Charlie can perform classic slapstick moves: kicking enemies from behind, tipping his bowler hat, twirling his cane, throwing pies, and dodging angry cops or rival characters.
