Description
Bluppo, released in 1997 by Webfoot Technologies, is a quirky and colorful puzzle-platformer that arrived toward the very end of the DOS era. While the world was obsessed with Quake and
Duke Nukem 3D, Webfoot carved out a niche for high-quality, 2D logic puzzles—and Bluppo is arguably one of their most polished efforts.
You play as Bluppo, a small, round, blue fish. The objective in each level is simple:
- Eat all the items: You must navigate a grid-based maze to consume specific items (usually fish or snacks).
- Reach the Exit: Once the level is cleared of items, the exit opens.
- Don't get Crushed: The game uses "gravity-based" mechanics similar to Boulder Dash or Supaplex. If you dig out the space underneath a heavy object (like a rock or a bomb), it will fall.
If it lands on you, it’s game over.
While it looks like a simple kid's game, Bluppo is actually quite difficult due to its physics-based puzzles.
Since the game takes place underwater, Webfoot added a clever twist. In addition to rocks that fall down, there are bubbles that float up. You have to manage both directions of "gravity" to
solve puzzles. Various sea creatures roam the levels. You can’t kill them directly; you have to lure them under falling rocks or trap them using the environment. There are 80 levels in total,
ranging from simple tutorials to "diabolic" screen-filling mazes that require precise timing. Unusually for this type of puzzle game, Bluppo featured a split-screen mode where you could compete
or cooperate with a friend.
