Description
Beats of Rage (2003), developed by the independent group Senile Team (founded by Roel van Mastbergen), is a monumental milestone in homebrew gaming history. While it did run on MS-DOS,
its legacy goes far beyond a single operating system. It was a massive open-source love letter to 16-bit side-scrolling beat 'em ups, specifically Sega's legendary Streets of Rage series.
The Game Mechanics and Mash-UpBeats of Rage is a traditional side-scrolling brawler. You walk from left to right across urban environments, punching, kicking, and throwing waves of street punks
and bosses. What made the game immediately striking was its clever asset mash-up:
The levels, interface, health bars, and overall game structure were heavily modeled after Streets of Rage. Instead of Sega characters, Senile Team beautifully ripped and adapted high-quality
sprites from SNK's fighting game franchise, The King of Fighters (KOF).
You could choose from three playable characters, each recontextualized into a classic brawler archetype:
Kula Diamond (renamed Mandy): The fast, agile, balanced female fighter.
Kyo Kusanagi (renamed Max): The standard, reliable all-around hero.
Yashiro Nanakase (renamed Golder): The slow, towering, heavy-hitting powerhouse.
The Birth of OpenBORWhile the original game was incredibly fun, its true historical significance lies in its engine. Senile Team built the game using a custom, highly adaptable engine. Realizing
how much people wanted to make their own brawlers, the engine was made open-source.
