Description
Barbie (1991), developed by Imagineering Inc. and published by Hi-Tech Expressions, is a fascinating piece of gaming history. While it is widely recognized as a prominent Nintendo
Entertainment System (NES) title, it was also ported to MS-DOS, making it the very first Barbie game released for IBM PC compatibles. The game was explicitly designed to entice
young girls (ages 3 to 9) into the male-dominated video game market of the early 90s, though it wrapped its girl-oriented themes inside a traditional Super Mario-style
The entire game takes place inside Barbie's mind. After falling asleep, she dreams that she has been invited to a spectacular Fantasy Ball to meet Ken, but she realizes she has
absolutely nothing appropriate to wear.
The DOS version featured full 256-color VGA graphics. Compared to the NES version's limited palette, the DOS version actually looked much sharper and more vibrant, with smoother
gradients on Barbie's outfits. While the graphics got an upgrade, the audio was a different story. If a player didn't own a premium AdLib or Sound Blaster card, the entire soundtrack
was forced through the internal PC Speaker, turning the cheerful pop tunes into a series of harsh, rhythmic clicks and beeps.
