Description
Alpine Tram Ride (1989), developed by Learning Technologies, Inc., is a very rare and niche educational title that often appeared in elementary school computer
labs during the late 80s and early 90s. It wasn't a game you’d typically find on a shelf at a big retail store; it was part of a series of "skill-building" programs
designed to improve a child's visual memory and problem-solving abilities.
The objective is to successfully operate an alpine tram (cable car) to transport passengers up and down a mountain. However, the tram won't move unless you solve
specific puzzles correctly.
The game focuses on pattern recognition and spatial awareness:
- You see a side-view of a snowy mountain with a tram car on a cable.
- Before the tram can depart, the game presents you with a set of visual patterns or sequences. You have to identify the missing piece of a pattern or replicate a sequence shown to you briefly.
- If you get the answers right, you get a simple animation of the tram sliding up the mountain, accompanied by some triumphant PC-speaker beeps.
- It was specifically designed to help kids with "visual discrimination"—the ability to see fine differences between shapes or symbols, which is a precursor to reading.
Very primitive CGA (4 colors: usually black, white, cyan, and magenta). The mountain is a simple jagged line, and the tram is a small box. Since Learning Technologies, Inc.
focused on the educational market, the game is incredibly straightforward. There are no "enemies" or ways to "die"—you just keep trying until you get the pattern right.
