Description
Adventures of Beetlejuice: Skeletons in the Closet (1990) is an interesting piece of licensed software history. Developed by Riedel Software Productions
and published by Hi-Tech Expressions, it was released right during the peak popularity of the Beetlejuice animated series (rather than being directly
based on the Tim Burton movie).
The objective is to help Beetlejuice clean out his "closet," which is essentially a series of overhead-view arenas. You must destroy various skeletons and
other ghoulish enemies that are roaming around. While you control Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz is often there to provide assistance or items. You use "scare"
tactics and various projectiles/powers to defeat the skeletons. It’s an arcade-style game where you move from one screen to the next, with the difficulty
increasing as more complex skeletons and hazards are introduced.
The game uses a top-down (overhead) perspective, which was somewhat unusual for licensed games of that era, as most were side-scrolling platformers. Beetlejuice
can use his gross-out abilities to stun or eliminate enemies. Because it was published by Hi-Tech Expressions (a company known for budget-friendly,
kid-oriented titles), the game is relatively simple and short compared to heavyweights like Ultima or Prince of Persia.
It features bright, 16-color EGA graphics that tried to mimic the colorful, chaotic look of the cartoon. The PC speaker "music" is a rendition of the
iconic Danny Elfman theme, though, as with most DOS games of 1990, it can be a bit grating on the ears after a few minutes.
