Description
ALF's World of Words, released in 1988/1989 by Vision Software, Inc., is a classic "edutainment" title designed for preschoolers and young children.
Unlike the infamous ALF game on the Sega Master System (where you fight bats with a salami), this DOS game was strictly educational and much gentler.
The primary goal is to teach children basic English literacy, including the alphabet, word formation, and simple grammar. The game is hosted by ALF himself
(the furry Alien Life Form from the TV show) and features several mini-games that test different linguistic skills.
The game was often bundled with or served as a companion to ALF’s Thinking Skills. In World of Words, you typically find three main activities:
- Alf-a-betical Order: You are given a list of words or letters, and you have to sort them into the correct alphabetical order. It’s a straightforward
logic puzzle that was surprisingly common in 80s educational software.
- Prefixes and Suffixes: The game presents a "stem" word, and you have to choose the correct prefix (like un-, re-) or suffix (like -ing, -ed) to create a
valid English word. If you try to make a nonsensical word, ALF will pop up and "mercilessly" correct you.
- Compound Words: You have to combine two separate words to form a single compound word (e.g., "Rain" + "Bow" = "Rainbow"). This was often the trickiest
part, as the game was quite strict about what it considered a proper compound word versus two separate words.
It used basic CGA/EGA graphics. ALF looks like his cartoon counterpart rather than the puppet from the live-action show. Since it was aimed at kids, the
controls were very simple (mostly arrow keys and Enter). If you played it on an original PC speaker, the "music" and beeps were... an acquired taste.
