Description
4-In-A-Row (1993), developed by Conquest Software, is a digital adaptation of the classic "Connect Four" board game. While many developers
created versions of this game for DOS, the Conquest Software version was a popular shareware title known for its simple but effective interface
during the early VGA era.
The objective is identical to the physical board game:
- You must be the first player to place four of your colored tokens (usually red or yellow/blue) in a continuous line.
- The line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
- You "drop" your tokens into one of the seven columns, and the piece falls to the lowest available row in that column.
Single Player vs. AI: It featured a computer opponent with adjustable difficulty levels. In 1993, a "strong" AI for Connect Four was a selling
point, as the game is mathematically "solved" (the first player can always win with perfect play), so the challenge was making the AI feel human
but tough.
Two-Player Mode: You could play against a friend on the same keyboard, taking turns to drop pieces.
The game moved away from the blocky ASCII or CGA looks of the 80s, offering a clean, colorful grid that looked great on the monitors of the time.
