Description
MindSpan used polygonal athletes on top of 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. This was a "wow" factor in 1992. It allowed for much smoother animations and different camera
angles compared to the flat sprites of the 80s. The game featured a TV-style replay system, allowing you to watch your world-record throw or your embarrassing hurdle
trip from multiple angles. It made full use of 256-color VGA, making the stadiums and water effects look vibrant and "modern" for the early 90s.
The goal is exactly what you'd expect from a high-stakes sports title: you represent a country and compete in a series of events to win the Gold Medal. You can play
in Training Mode to master the mechanics or enter a Tournament to compete for the overall championship across all disciplines.
MindSpan selected a diverse range of Olympic-style events, each requiring a different set of skills:
- 400m Hurdles: Rhythm and timing.
- Pole Vault: Precise timing of the plant and the kick.
- High Jump: Managing speed and the "Fosbury Flop" arc.
- Javelin: Balancing run-up speed with the release angle.
- 100m Dash: Pure, old-school button mashing (RIP your keyboard).
- Equestrian (Show Jumping): One of the most unique events, focusing on steering and jump timing.
- Kayaking: Maneuvering through gates in turbulent water.
- Archery: Managing wind resistance and a steady aim.
