Description

Circuit Racer — originally released as Speed Haste in Europe is a fast-paced 3D arcade racing game developed by Spanish studio NoriaWorks Entertainment and released in 1995 for MS-DOS. The game was designed to capitalize on the mid-1990s boom of 3D racing titles, offering accessible, high-speed action similar to arcade hits of the era.
Players can choose between two distinct vehicle classes: lightweight Formula One open-wheel cars and heavy, stocky NASCAR-style stock cars.
The F1 cars emphasize high top speeds, tight cornering, and rapid acceleration on technical circuits. In contrast, the stock cars feature drift-heavy physics and higher durability, allowing players to slide through turns and bump into opponents with fewer penalties.
The gameplay prioritizes pure arcade fun over realistic simulation physics, making momentum control and taking tight racing lines the primary keys to victory. Rather than penalizing players with complex damage mechanics, the game encourages aggressive driving and power-sliding around sharp bends.
The game features multiple gameplay modes, including a full Championship mode where players race across a series of tracks to win a seasonal cup.
Single Race and Time Attack modes allow players to practice specific circuits or compete against their own best lap times. For multiplayer, the game supports two players via split-screen on a single PC keyboard or gamepad setup. It also supports local network play for up to four players using the IPX protocol, which was a standout feature for mid-90s PC gaming.
Technologically, the custom 3D engine rendered flat-shaded and texture-mapped polygon graphics entirely in software. This lightweight optimization allowed the game to run at smooth, high frame rates even on standard Intel 486 or early Pentium PCs without needing dedicated 3D accelerator cards. Players can toggle between multiple camera angles, including third-person chase cameras and an immersive first-person view.
The tracks feature varied locations ranging from dedicated race circuits to scenic open-air environments with elevation changes. Dynamic sound effects and an upbeat MIDI synth soundtrack complement the high-tempo arcade presentation.
While it faced stiff competition from big-budget titles like Screamer and The Need for Speed, it gained a dedicated cult following due to its fluid performance and fun multiplayer options. Years after its commercial release, lead developer Javier Arévalo and NoriaWorks released the original C/Assembly source code to the public. This open-source release enabled retro gaming enthusiasts to port the game engine to modern operating systems and source ports. Today, Circuit Racer / Speed Haste is remembered as a classic piece of 1990s Spanish game development and an impressive technical achievement for DOS software rendering.
