Description
Rise 2: Resurrection (1996) is a 2D fighting game developed by Mirage Technologies (Multimedia) Ltd and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It is the direct
sequel to the heavily hyped but critically panned 1994 game Rise of the Robots.
Released for MS-DOS, Sony PlayStation, and Sega Saturn, Rise 2 was Mirage's ambitious attempt to address the glaring gameplay issues of the original game
while continuing its futuristic cyborg story.
The game picks up immediately after the events of Rise of the Robots. The rogue artificial intelligence known as the Supervisor has taken over the metropolis
and facilities of Metropolis City.
In the original game, the protagonist ECO (Enhanced Cybernetic Organism) was defeated. However, ECO’s mind was absorbed into the Metropolis neural network.
Using a nanotech virus, ECO resurfaces to take down the Supervisor once and for all. To reach her, players must fight through waves of heavy combat droids, cyborg mercenaries, and updated security units across various industrial sector battlegrounds.
Where the first game was notorious for terrible controls, limited movesets, and unbalanced AI, Rise 2: Resurrection introduced major mechanical changes to
compete with mid-90s fighting giants like Street Fighter Alpha and Killer Instinct:
Expanded Roster: The playable character list expanded dramatically from the original's modest roster to 18 distinct cyborg fighters (plus hidden unlockable boss
characters).
Improved Combo System: Mirage implemented a proper combo engine, allowing players to chain light, medium, and heavy attacks into special moves.
Super Moves & Executive Executions: Taking inspiration from Mortal Kombat fatalities, fighters could perform devastating finishing moves known as Execution Moves
at the end of a match.
Projectile & Energy Attacks: Unlike the predominantly close-quarters combat of its predecessor, Rise 2 introduced ranged energy blasts, trap moves, and
counter-attacks across most characters.
