Description

Oil’s Well (1990) is an enhanced MS-DOS remake of Sierra On-Line's popular 1983 arcade-style puzzle game. While the original 1983 release was coded by Thomas J. Mitchell, this upgraded 1990 DOS version was developed by Banana Development, Inc. and published by Sierra On-Line.
The gameplay is heavily inspired by the 1982 arcade game Anteater. Instead of an anteater's tongue or a maze-runner, you control an oil drill bit connected to a trailing pipe as it extends through subterranean passages to collect drops of oil (dots).
You guide the drill head down through the maze to collect oil and score points. As you drill deeper, your pipe grows longer behind you. Subterranean creatures patrol the paths. While your drill head can destroy these creatures if it collides with them head-on, your trailing pipe is entirely vulnerable. If a creature touches any part of the exposed pipe, you lose a life.
The core risk/reward mechanic relies on a button that instantly retracts the drill head back to the top. You must constantly extend into danger and quickly snap the pipe back out of harm's way when enemies approach.
