New Math Blaster Plus! is an iconic educational video game released in 1990 by Davidson & Associates, Inc. Designed primarily for children aged 6 to 12, it was an updated and expanded remake of the original 1983 hit Math Blaster!. It played a massive role in popularized edutainment (educational entertainment) in the early 1990s on MS-DOS, Apple II, and Macintosh platforms.
The game introduces players to Blasternaut and his robotic dog companion, Spot. Your goal is to help Blasternaut solve arithmetic problems to defeat evil space monsters, power his spaceship, and navigate interstellar missions.
The game is divided into four main arcade-style activities, each focusing on core math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages):
Trash Basher (Rocket Launch): Players solve math problems to convert space trash into fuel. Solving problems correctly fills up Blasternaut's rocket fuel tank, allowing his spaceship to launch to the next level.
Number Recycler: A puzzle-like conveyor belt game where players move numbers and math symbols into place to form true mathematical equations. Teaches logical thinking and equation structure rather than just fast computation.
Math Blaster (Arcade Shooting): The flagship mode. Blasternaut flies around with a jetpack at the top of the screen. A math problem appears at the bottom, and flying space monsters appear carrying different numbers. Players steer Blasternaut and shoot the monster carrying the correct answer while dodging obstacles.
Planet Search / Cave Search (Bonus Game): A maze-like navigation game where players guide Blasternaut through caverns or across planetary maps. Collect items and avoid hazards, serving as a fun reward between study rounds.
