MoleZ

MoleZ is an absolute cult classic from the Finnish "freeware scene" of the late 90s. If you remember playing this, you likely spent many hours crowded around a single keyboard with friends, as that was where the game truly shined.
Developed by FRACTiLE Games and released in 1997, it belongs to a very specific sub-genre of 2D "platform-shooter" games that were incredibly popular in Northern Europe. The goal is total annihilation. It is a real-time, 2D deathmatch game where you control a heavily armed mole. Your objective is to navigate a fully destructible underground environment and eliminate all other moles using a massive arsenal of weapons.
Unlike Worms, which is turn-based, MoleZ is fast-paced and chaotic. Everything happens at once, requiring quick reflexes. This was the most important tool in the game. It allowed you to swing through tunnels, dodge incoming fire, and maneuver through the dirt at high speeds. Every explosion and every gunshot can carve out the earth. You can dig your own tunnels to hide or blast a hole through a wall to reach an enemy. Up to 4 players could play on a single PC. This led to the famous "keyboard ghosting" issue where if too many people pressed keys at once, the computer would beep and someone wouldn't be able to move.
The game featured a huge variety of weapons, including: Standard Pistols and Submachine guns. Heavy ordnance like Bazookas and Grenades. Unique items like the "Dirt Thrower" or powerful Lasers.
