Description
This game is a significant entry in the realm of golf simulations for its time. It serves as the third major installment in the popular "Jack Nicklaus" golf series, following
"Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf" (1988) and "Jack Nicklaus' Unlimited Golf & Course Design" (1990).
It is a golf simulation game, combining realistic gameplay with robust course design capabilities.
It's developed by Sculptured Software, Inc., and was published by Accolade.
A major upgrade for the series, the Signature Edition features enhanced 256-color VGA graphics. This allows for more detailed and visually appealing digitized courses and golfer
animations, making the experience more immersive than its predecessors.
A core strength of the Jack Nicklaus series, the course designer in this edition is highly refined. Players can create incredibly detailed and customized golf courses. It even
offers the ability to import player-created graphical objects (using .lbm or .pcx file formats), which greatly expands the possibilities for unique designs. Courses made in
previous "Unlimited Golf" versions are also compatible.
The game includes two authentic golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus himself: English Turn and Sherwood Country Club.
Players can engage in various golf modes, including Stroke Play and Skins, across three different difficulty levels. Practice facilities like a driving range and putting green
are also available.
It supports multiplayer for up to four human players, who take turns during a round. You can also customize and play against computer-controlled opponents.
Two official add-on diskettes were released for the MS-DOS version: "Jack Nicklaus Signature Tour Vol. 1" (which includes Muirfield in Scotland and Muirfield Village in Ohio)
and "Jack Nicklaus Signature Tour Vol. 2".
Upon its release, "Jack Nicklaus Golf & Course Design: Signature Edition" receives praise from critics for its significant graphical improvements and its comprehensive,
user-friendly course designer. It is often regarded as a strong competitor in the golf simulation genre of its era, standing alongside titles like the "Links" series.
Many players still consider it a highly enjoyable and feature-rich golf game from the golden age of DOS gaming. It marks the last title in the series developed by Sculptured
Software.
In essence, "Jack Nicklaus Golf & Course Design: Signature Edition" is recognized for delivering a deep and graphically advanced golf simulation experience for its time,
with its standout feature being the versatile and powerful course creation tool.
