Description

Coaster (1993), developed by the small independent outfit Code To Go and published by Walt Disney Computer Software, is a fascinating and highly ambitious simulation game. Long before RollerCoaster Tycoon took over the PC world, Coaster gave players a pure, focused engineering sandbox to design, test, and ride their very own dream roller coasters. Unlike standard theme park management simulators where you manage hot dog stands and trash cans, Coaster strips away the business elements to focus entirely on track engineering and physics.
You design your coasters piece-by-piece on a 3D wireframe grid interface. The control panel allows you to adjust track height, banks, turns, massive drops, loops, corkscrews, and camelbacks. Code To Go implemented a relatively realistic physics engine for 1993.
The simulator mathematically calculates kinetic energy, potential energy, momentum, friction, and G-forces. If your initial lift hill isn't high enough, your train won't make it through the first loop; if a drop is too sharp or a turn isn't properly banked, your train will brutally derail or subject passengers to hazardous forces.
Once you manage to complete a fully closed, working track circuit, the game shifts into two distinct phases:
- You can hop directly into the front seat of your custom creation for a real-time, first-person 3D perspective ride. Using 256-color VGA graphics, the camera smoothly swoops, drops, and loops through the wireframe and polygon landscape to simulate the visceral velocity of the coaster. It even featured sound card support to mimic the clanking chains of the lift hills and the rushing wind of a drop.
- To give the sandbox a goal structure, the game includes a virtual panel of Coaster Critics (such as "Fearless Frank"). These diverse AI personas ride your track and grade your creation across several metrics, including excitement, fear, smoothly engineered curves, and overall safety. Earning a perfect score from the critics required an exquisite balance of extreme thrills and mechanical stability.
The Historical ImpactFor 1993, Coaster was incredibly forward-thinking. Most personal computers of the era struggled heavily with rendering real-time 3D environments, so Code To Go's clean wireframe-meets-polygon approach was a smart technical compromise that allowed the engine to run smoothly on standard Intel 386 and 486 DX machines.
