Description

Bubble Ghost (1987), originally created by French developer Christophe Andréani and published by ERE Informatique, is one of the most uniquely charming, nerve-wracking action-puzzle games of the 80s.
While it debuted on the Atari ST, its 1988 MS-DOS port (distributed in North America by Infogrames/Accolade) successfully brought its inventive, physics-lite mechanics to PC users worldwide.
You control a mischievous, floating little ghost. Instead of haunting a castle or scaring people, your entire purpose in life is to guide a fragile, floating soap bubble through a massive, multi-room haunted mansion consisting of 35 hazardous screens (or "halls"). You have no direct physical way to push the bubble. If your ghost touches it, nothing happens. Instead, you must position the ghost's mouth near the bubble, rotate your character in one of eight directions, and blow a gust of air to propel the bubble forward.
The game looks cute, but its difficulty is legendary. The bubble operates on simulated inertia—once you blow it, it drifts smoothly through the air until it hits an object or you blow air from the opposite direction to counteract its speed.
The walls of the mansion are lined with spikes, bricks, and sharp edges. If the bubble brushes against any solid object or wall, it instantly pops, costing you one of your limited lives.
The mansion isn't static. As you move from room to room, you have to maneuver the bubble past spinning fan blades, sizzling laser beams, burning candle flames, and wandering monsters.
To get through certain rooms, your ghost must interact with the environment directly. For example, you might have to blow directly onto a candle to extinguish its flame, or blow at a switch to temporarily shut down a laser wall so the bubble can float past safely.
A "Bonus" bar at the bottom of the screen slowly ticks down the longer you spend in a single room. The faster you clear a hall, the more points you carry over to your high score.
