PC Games from Schools in the 90’s

Before the world of iPads and tablets, there were PC games. In the 1990’s the home computer also found its way into the classroom, and opened up the opportunity for making learning fun with PC games. Many of these games were made before ever making their way into the classroom, but anyone who attending school in the 90’s will surely remember these favorites. And, while gaming has changed a lot since then, these old PC games are still lots of fun to play.

Math Blaster

Math Blaster was originally released in the 80’s but as home computing increased, there was a series of different games introduced as part of the Blaster Learning System. In this game, players complete math facts to blast debris in outer space. This game is still alive and well with a number of updates since the days of elementary school, and although it has changed some since the original, Math Blaster is still available to play online.

Mario Teaches Typing

This game is actually only one in a series of five educational games featuring Mario. In the early 90’s Mario Teaches Typing came on the scene to help teach youngsters to type. It not only helps the player to recognize where the keys are on the keyboard and increase typing speed, but it also helps to learn the proper finger placement for typing. For those who remember this game it can still be found online.

Reader Rabbit

Reader Rabbit debuted in the late 80’s and was so effective at teaching basic reading skills that it became a staple in many school classrooms for decades to come. It was updated a few times since the first version, and can be found online for those who want to play this classic PC learning game. Or for those who want to play on a gaming system instead, there is a version for Wii available, but the PC version is still the best.

Super Solvers Series

Last up on the list is the Super Solvers Series which were most popular for their Treasure Mountain and Treasure Cove games. These games were designed to teach kids between the ages of 5 and 9 problem solving skills by giving the players a series of riddles and math problems to solve to access a key. The key is then used to unlock the next level of riddles. Along the way, earn treasure to be deposited in your chest for a prize. These old PC games can still be found thanks to online archives.

Eagle Eye Mysteries

The original Eagle Eye Mysteries was released in 1993, and a year later the Eagle Eyes Mysteries in London was released by Electronic Arts. While this may not be viewed as “educational” as some of the other games from the 90’s it still teaches some important skills. This game was designed to teach basic problem solving skills by learning how to put pieces of information to come together while helping Jake and Jennifer Eagle solve mysteries.
