Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

The game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is a game that was released in 1992 by LucasArts. The following year, the game was updated and released on CD ROM, included in the updates was digital sound enhancements. This point and click adventure game requires the player to make decisions and solve puzzles to determine the fate of the game. As it is expected of all things Indiana Jones, the player engages in a quest to locate a lost treasure, and in this case, the lost city of Atlantis. With the help of Sophia, a former coworker of Indiana Jones’s and archaeologist, the city must be found before the Nazis locate it to prevent its powers to be used for evil.

Reception

The introduction of Indiana Jones into the PC gaming world was very well received. With the CD ROM version, players no longer had to read subtitles on the screen in order to follow a game’s story line. Instead the sound provided in Fate of Atlantis was groundbreaking and changed the way PC gamers came to expect of games. The old PC gameswas so well received, it also won a number of different awards for best game of the year, including the 13th best game of all time by PC Gamer UK the year after it was released. It has sold over a million copies, and has become viewed as a classic in the adventure PC game genre. Additional ground work was also done for two different sequels to the game, but for a number of different logistical reasons, they never came to pass. Instead they were developed into comics.

SCUMM

Like many of the adventure games developed by LucasArts, Indiana Jones uses a story system called SCUMM to progress the storyline throughout the game. Any PC gamer who has played another point and click game by LucasArts has likely used this type of story system. This technology made it possible for players to select one of three different options when faced with a riddle or problem to solve. The story would then follow a different line of progression based on the answer the player selected. It also made it possible for the outcome on the game to be different depending on the choices the player made.

Which Path Will You Choose

At the start of the game, the player is able to pick one of three paths to start the game. These paths are different modes of play. In the team path, Indiana Jones works with Sophia Hapgood to locate the city of Atlantis. In the Wits Path, the primary focus of the game is on solving complex riddles and puzzles to locate the lost city. The Fists Path’s main focus is on fighting and different action sequences to progress through the game. Gain points throughout the game for the more obstacles, puzzles, and objects completed. But unlike other point and click adventure old PC games though, beware of possible dangers which can lead to the demise of Indiana Jones.
